Tuesday 14th March saw the teachers and students of UVHS embrace the global maths event to celebrate Pi (π).
Pi, a Greek letter using the symbol π to represent part of the equation to work out the circumference of a circle.
14th March is chosen for this event as the first 3 digits of Pi are 3.14159.
The day’s activities run by the Maths Department to celebrate Pi included a Maths quiz, making paper chains and reciting Pi. The current school record held by ex-pupil Jacob Allen for memorising Pi to 142 decimal places is still intact but Chloe (11.5) did extremely well on the day memorising Pi to 91 decimal places. Entries are still being taken.
The main event other than luxury pies being on the menu at lunchtime was the Pi eating competition in the school hall.
In front of a packed hall at lunchtime Alex (13.1) Mr Thurlwell, Mr Fisher, Mr Reid, Miss Clapham and Mr Pierce commenced battle, the rules – eat 6 fruit pies in as quick as time as possible!
The winner Mr Pierce (his Ninja Warrior training obviously paying off!) in 1 minute 48 seconds was closely followed by Miss Clapham and Mr Fisher in 3rd place.
School Angel works with lots of big shopping brands in the UK which have agreed to donate a portion of the profit, they normally make on your shopping if you use the School Angel website to visit their shop. You are guaranteed to only pay exactly the same price, for whatever you buy, but UVHS will also receive a donation.
