Last half term saw the Music Department re-establish its unique relationship with the Band Service of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. Over the last 15 years we have seen 8 students go into the Marines’ Bands (as well as 1 to the Army Corps of Music and one to the RAF Central band), all as a result of our regular link-ups. In the past we have enjoyed annual joint concerts at The Coro in Ulverston, trips down to HMS Raleigh in Plymouth to perform joint concerts, see what life is like for a trainee and use the recording studio there, as well as send Year 10s to Portsmouth for work experience at HMS Collingwood and the School of Music.
On Friday 6th May, 35 of our senior instrumentalists joined the Royal Marines Band at The Coro for a very intensive 2-hour rehearsal of some (very) hard music in preparation for a massed bands finale the next day. That evening, we all let our hair down with a ‘Dance Band Social’ attended by over 200 parents, friends and students. UVHS Swing Band played a fantastic 1 hour set before handing over to the Marines’ Dance Band (who had just returned from a 2-week concert tour to Dubai). They were absolutely amazing, and the audience danced away to the late hours.
On Saturday 7th May, Following another very strenuous massed bands rehearsal, a packed-out Coro (tickets sold out weeks before) saw an absolutely stunning joint concert between our two bands. First the UVHS Wind band took the stage for half an hour playing a ‘film music’ programme in including the Star Wars Symphonic Suite and Harlem Nocturne (featuring Ben Lewis on alto sax).
After an interval, the Marines Band played a superb set on their own, including drumming displays from the Corps of Drums, before inviting our 35 seniors back to the stage for the finale. Our Percussion Ensemble joined the Corps of Drums:
and two of the soloists in this set were former UVHS students: Corporal Andy Spain (soon to be Sergeant) gave an amazingly virtuosic performance of ‘Against All Odds’ on alto sax and Musician Rob Norrie performed a beautiful arrangement of Michael Jackson’s ‘She’s Out Of My Life’. The Marines also invited Ben Lewis to sing ‘Beyond the Sea’ with them.
All in all an amazing weekend (and we have already secured funding for a repeat next year)!
