Over May half-term, 8 of our Year 10 GCSE instrumentalists were invited to go down to HMS Collingwood in Portsmouth for a Career Acquaint Visit with the Band Service of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines – they had a brilliant time!
During their visit, they visited the Royal Marines School of Music and, as well as having instrumental lessons with the professors there (some of the best musicians and teachers in the world), they also sat in on lengthy rehearsals with the concert band and big band. Two of our former UVHS students are currently at the School of Music – Jodie Giles is a trainee (about to complete her second year) and Corporal Andy Spain is the saxophone instructor there: both were on hand to give a first-hand account of what life is like as a musician in the Royal Marines.
At HMS Collingwood, they were all put through their paces in the gym and on the running track so that they could all experience what sort of expectation there would be if they applied to audition for the Band Service.
Following on from a brilliant performance weekend at The Coro three weeks previously, they all gained a great insight into the workings of the Band Service (seeing what accommodation, food, pay and pensions were like – including tuition fees for degrees all being covered!), and several are now considering it as a career.
Many thanks to the RM for allowing us such a great opportunity – several other GCSE and A Level music students will be going down for a similar experience in October half-term.
