Ten students from Year 13 travelled to Addis Ababa this summer to carry out a community building project. The aim of which was to provide a lunch shelter and seating for a local high school. The students were accommodated in the classrooms of the nearby kindergarten and experienced the hardships that this suburb of Addis Ababa had to deal with on a daily basis, power cuts and running water only available for one day out of four despite it being the rainy season. At one point rainwater was collected from the roves for washing and flushing toilets. The students took these conditions in their stride and worked hard to bring the project in on time.
They also spent time at a local orphanage where they organized activities for the children including a five a side tournament. I’m afraid to say that we kept up the English tradition of being beaten on penalties in the final!
Before leaving for Addis Ababa students had raised enough money through cake sales and a sponsored walk to donate nine heaters to the local hospital for their post maternity recovery rooms.
The students made many friends wherever they went and through their hard work made an honest and meaningful contributions to communities they worked with.
