Rugby at UVHS is part of the All Schools RFU Programme – Garry Holmes the Rugby Development Officer for Furness and South Lakes nominated our Y7 Girls Rugby Team, who were then selected alongside Millom to play in curtain raiser at Twickenham on the opening day of the 2017 Six Nations England v France game on Saturday 4th February.
The 15 Y7 girls selected (Skye, Jasmine, Georgia, Abbie, Rebecca, Gilly, Teighan, Emily, Jessica, Rhiannon, Blossom, Evie, Caitlin, Abbie & Ruby) will travel down to London after school on Friday with Mrs Hayton and 4 Young Leaders (Molly & Mazie from Y9, Chloe & Georgia from Y11) ready to play in a Tag Rugby Tournament at Twickenham on Saturday before the big event. The team will then form a guard of honour for the National Anthem and of course get to watch the game, before travelling back home on Sunday. Needless to say the girls are very excited about the trip and we look forward to hearing about their adventure next week.
After arriving at Twickenham early on the big day the girls had chance to have a good look around the stadium and prepare themselves for their game on the hallowed turf.
Then in front of a packed stadium, just short of 82,000 and of course all the people watching at home the girls stepped out to form the guard of honour for the English and French teams. After their official duties were over the UVHS team had more or less front row seats to see the all the action of both the men’s game and the women’s game which both ended in victories.
The girls even managed to get one or two autographs and pictures.
The rugby girls have all returned safely from their incredible weekend away having thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Not everyone can say they have played at Twickenham but our girls can.

Following the trip, Mr Fay received a letter from Liam Nicholls, an England Rugby Development Officer for Cumbria
After speaking to the staff at HQ they were full of praise for your school in terms of behaviour on the site. Some schools have to be reminded several times of the rules and expectations whilst visiting a National Stadium on match day, however they state that your school were one of the best they had ever had which is a credit to the pupils and support staff.
School Angel works with lots of big shopping brands in the UK which have agreed to donate a portion of the profit, they normally make on your shopping if you use the School Angel website to visit their shop. You are guaranteed to only pay exactly the same price, for whatever you buy, but UVHS will also receive a donation.
