Royal Geographical Society Ambassador Visit

On Wednesday 17th and Friday 19th January, UVHS welcomed Royal Geographical Society (RGS) Ambassador Joshua Wilkinson.

The RGS scheme works to introduce pupils to the exciting and relevant benefits of studying geography, widening their perception of the subject and encouraging them to pursue it beyond the compulsory stages.

As Y9 are currently in the process of selecting their option choices for GCSE, Joshua visited the school to illustrate the above via a range of informative, interactive and enjoyable activities from finding out the geography of a pencil to applying skills to distorted maps of the world. Joshua is currently studying for his undergraduate degree (BA) at Liverpool University and so he also introduced our Y9 pupils to the various research opportunities Geography presents beyond study at school.

Evie in 9.2 is considering Geography at GCSE next year and said “I really enjoyed it when the Geography Ambassador came in to talk to us. The talk was very informative – we even got I Love Geography pencils to take home as souvenirs to remember the experience”.

Gilbert in 9.4 also said, “The Geography Ambassador showed us what Geography can lead us to in the future. He helped us with questions we had and we learnt lots of facts about Geography that we didn’t know before”.

On behalf of the UVHS Geography department and all our Y9 pupils, we would like to thank Joshua for his visit. We look forward to welcoming an RGS Ambassador next year!
