The Mathematics Department at UVHS aims to develop pupils’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data. We offer a stimulating environment and a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate students and demand their active participation. We set challenging targets with high expectations of achievement and progression for all pupils. The department also looks to explore enrichment opportunities both within and outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics.
The department is well resourced and is housed in seven classrooms all with interactive white boards, a departmental office/resource base and small computer room for student research. Some use is made of teaching rooms elsewhere in the school (mainly for computer access and Sixth Form lessons) but the majority of the department’s teaching is in its own specialist accommodation.
After the first half-term in Year 7 setting is introduced by half year groups. The size of the lower ability sets is kept small to provide the maximum support for those who find the subject particularly challenging. Additionally a small number of students receive extra support from the Learning Support team. The placement of pupils in sets is reviewed regularly, with movement up and down as necessary based upon recent test results and the quality of class work and homework.
