Here at UVHS we aim to support our students with their reading. Now in its fifth year, we run an Accelerated Reader programme which aims to encourage students to read more, to enjoy reading for pleasure, and to improve their reading comprehension skills along the way.
Early in the year all Y7 students undertake a Star Reader Test, which tells students what ‘level’ they are reading at (it measures vocabulary, close reading, comprehension and inference skills) and guides them towards appropriate material. Books are categorised by colour to reflect varying abilities, and students can work through these colours at their own pace. We also use the STAR Reader to identify students who may need a bit of extra help with their reading: selected students are paired up with a Reading Buddy.
Miss Steele, the Assistant Head of Sixth Form, recruits students from Y12 – perhaps they are interested in teaching, working with others or just want to enhance their UCAS application – to become a Reading Buddies. We have approximately 30 involved this year.
Selected Y7 students then use the library as normal to select books which are more ideally suited to their reading age; each book in the programme has a quiz attached to it which is designed to determine the students’ comprehension of the narrative events and the vocabulary used. Later in the year there is a second Star Reader Test which is used to track the progress and growth in reading age. Their ‘Buddies’ acts as mentors, guides and role model to the Y7 student by listening to them read, sometimes reading to them, talking about their books, characters and events, and encouraging them to take their quizzes to see how they’re progressing. For most children it’s about self-esteem rather than ability, and Reading Buddies allows them to feel a sense of worth in what, why and how they’re reading
The programme runs for the majority of the academic year and the atmosphere in the library every Thursday form time is warm, purposeful and full of enthusiasm. The Y7 students respond with great positivity to the one-to-one attention they get from the Y12 students, who in turn get something from the support and encouragement they offer. It’s an enormous commitment from all involved, but one with enormous benefits too.
If you have any questions about Accelerated Reader or Reading Buddies at UVHS, please contact Mr Stubbert or Miss Steele.
