On Tuesday 11th October, UVHS welcomed Andrea Vicari (Musical Director) and ambassadors of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain to carry out a musical workshop.
The NYJO is one of the top youth jazz ensembles in the world and this was an opportunity for our musicians to work alongside an amazing group specializing in jazz.
In what was a great experience for the students and they were told that they would be welcome to audition for (and almost certainly get in to) the new NYJO Cumbria Academy, being set up in the New Year. Several have also been invited to go to London to visit the Trinity Laban Music Conservatoire with a view to following either an undergraduate course in jazz performance there or, in the future, a postgraduate degree.
Andrea Vicari, said, “It is great to be involved with schools and encouraging students to play jazz. The experience is invaluable to these pupils and it is great for them to play music. When you see a school in a small town, and the teacher has produced such a strong band, you know they have worked extremely hard.”
