Former UVHS Student Wins Chemistry Prize

Former UVHS student’s success showcases women in science

A chemistry student in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster University has been rewarded a prestigious prize for high achieving female students studying science and STEM-related subjects.

Former Ulverston Victoria High School student Annabelle Nicholson has been awarded a Women into Science (2018) accolade, and £600, by Ede & Ravenscroft, who supply robes for Lancaster University students during graduation.

The prize aims to draw upon the success of females in science subjects by showcasing their outstanding academic performance.

Miss Nicholson, who studies for a MChem (Hons) Chemistry Study Abroad degree at Lancaster University, said: “I’m pleasantly surprised that I’ve won the Women into Science award and it has really filled me with confidence!

“In the future, I want to combine my passion for chemistry with my love of the German language to one day live in Germany and work for a chemical company.

“Lancaster University is helping me reach my career aspirations by offering a degree which allows me to broaden my horizons by studying in another country and my lecturers are very professional, friendly and approachable, meaning that I can ask for help with my work at any time.”

The Head of Department for Chemistry at Lancaster University, Peter Fielden, added: “I am delighted that Annabelle has received this award in recognition of her outstanding performance on our Chemistry degree course.

“My sincere congratulations and a very well done to her!”

The MChem (Hons) Chemistry Study Abroad degree at Lancaster University allows students to explore a core range of chemistry topics and develop their own contemporary research topics whilst spending a year studying at one of our international partner universities.
