Travelling Without a Ticket

When students are travelling to and from school, they are representing us in the community and should be seen to demonstrate our Victoria Values.

This includes on the train, where the conductor for our route has noticed an ongoing pattern of students not purchasing tickets. They are happy to work with students with genuine mistakes, once on board. However, as of next week, the Northern Railways employees may seek further action with repeat offenders.

To “Bust a few myths” on this:

  • “They won’t fine me over a small amount of money!” It is estimated that fare evasion costs the rail industry approximately £400 million a year. A large number of the cases which lead to prosecution involve relatively small amounts of money. Northern Railways do have the capacity to apply penalties for even minor ticket fares for repeat offenders.
  • “They don’t know who I am so how will they catch me?” There are cameras on board the train, and staff such as the Train Conductor wear body cameras too. Footage can then be submitted to the Police and School to identify individuals who continue to not buy a ticket or behave inappropriately.
