Students should have achieved at least a 6 in GCSE English Language, English Literature or History.
If you’re fascinated by the constantly expanding and evolving world of the media, then this is the course for you.
The fluid definition of the term ‘media’ means this is an exciting, dynamic, eclectic course designed to suit those with an interest in more traditional aspects such as TV, radio and film, but also the increasingly online, social, participatory media platforms that dominate modern life. In A Level Media you can: learn about the way in which the news is reported and relayed to different audiences; delve into the world of social media and its advertising capacity; develop an in depth understanding of the world of television, music and film industries and how they work to reach different audiences; and explore the various means through which audiences consume and create their entertainment.
You’ll also investigate challenging ideas about products and audiences, about what makes a successful media campaign, and what impact all these things might have on a societal and psychological level. The first year of the course focuses on how media language is used to construct representations and meaning in a variety of set media products. In the second year you will consider how media industries are evolving and using technology to reach, target and address audiences through a variety of set media products.
You will also have the opportunity to create a cross-media product – a website and a print-based poster, for example – for a stated intended audience in response to a set brief.
